First Lady visits

2014-03-03 09 41 22After only a year of serving as the first lady of Alabama, Diane Bentley gained some unique insight about domestic violence. She stated in an interview given to local media at the governor’s home, that domestic violence was something very foreign to her as she had been blessed with positive relationships throughout her life. It was after meeting two women who, in defending themselves from abusive husbands, had killed them and were serving time in prison that she said she gained a new understanding.  She said that the meeting had left a lasting impression on her and helped her see the need for awareness. She was saddened by the fact that they did not know about resources that could have helped them find another way of escape. Since that time she has made domestic violence awareness one of her main causes and is promoting the work of shelters and other programs that aid victims throughout the state. Mrs. Bentley recently visited Safeplace on her travels across North Alabama. She is pictured here with Safeplace Executive Director Rachel Cabaniss and Assistant Director Ginger Stone.
