Providing services to six mostly rural counties would be almost impossible without the support of our community partners. Each county has a group of volunteers who serve on their domestic violence coalition, inter-agency council or task force. Each group is made up stake holders who want to create safe places within their own communities for victims of abuse.
Two of the councils, the Lauderdale and the Lawrence county group, choose to have an inter-agency council which not only works to eradicate family violence but are made up of persons who work with all victims of crime or circumstance. Domestic Violence is one part of their mission. The Colbert, Franklin and Winston Coalitions and the Marion County Task Force, choose to focus only on domestic violence issues. At times these group plan fund raisers for the shelter, but they also work together to provide trainings in their community for law enforcement, social workers and medical staff. They create and present public awareness programs. They also meet monthly to discuss issues that arise within their own county and work together to try and alleviate the problem areas. These councils play a major role in helping Safeplace to reach out to victims of abuse in rural Northwest Alabama.
