The Sign Project

The Sign Project began in 2005 as an outreach effort of Safeplace, Inc. and the Marion County Domestic Violence Task Force. They were soon joined by the other five counties served by Safeplace. The premise of this project is to provide ‘safe places’ for victims to go for help and information. Isolation plays such a pivotal role in the power and control related to domestic violence. The Sign Project was designed to overcome this isolation.

A victim suffering from abuse and violence sees a purple ribbon on the door or window of a business. The victim knows she can walk in ask for help. The victim will be taken to a safe area where she will receive assistance from a trained Safeplace volunteer. The victim will be given the information she needs and the opportunity to contact the Safeplace crisis line. Sign project volunteers are not counselors or social workers, they serve as a link to Safeplace and the help awaiting a victim in need. The goal of the Sign Project is to cover Northwest Alabama and provide safety, hope and assistance to victims of domestic violence.
