Desperate times call ….
There is an old saying that desperate times call for desperate measures. There was a story recently of a young woman who came up with a way to call for help that was a good example of thinking outside the box. She convinced her abuser that she was calling to order a pizza, but instead dialed 911. The 911 operator recalled thinking that it was just another prank call at first, but as the conversation progressed she realized that the woman was truly in crisis. She gave her address and ordered a pizza. The operator asked “Ummm…. I’m sorry, you know you’ve called 911 right?” “Yeah, do you know how long it will be.” The operator caught on and said “Ok, Ma’am do you have an emergency?” After confirming that yes she did, the operator asked if there was someone in the room with her that made it impossible for her to talk. She said “Yes, that’s correct. Do you know how long it will be?” The operator explained that she had an officer a mile away from the location and asked if there were any weapons in the home. She said “Nope, see you soon, thanks.”
As police were on their way, the history of calls to the address was checked, there had been multiple previous domestic violence calls. When the arrived they found the boyfriend intoxicated and the female had been physically beaten. There must have been a surprised look on the man’s face when he opened the door expecting a pizza and found a police officer. The operator mentioned how clever she thought it was of the woman to come up with a way of escape. We know that this was just her way of moving from being a victim – to becoming a survivor.
